What does one need, actually, to make money in Internet Marketing?

Okay, if you’ve read anything else on this website Earn Money Ways, you know there’s more involved to earning money on the internet than just buying a domain name and somehow putting up a website offering people something for sale. And it took some work to do this even if it was your first time (unless you hired someone to do it for you).

The secret sauce that makes any internet website earn money, is targeted visitors to that website. Marketers call this traffic. Obviously the more traffic visiting your website that can use what you’re offering the more money you will earn.

There are a number of ways of getting traffic to visit your website. Many of them are free as well, but take time. The fastest way to get traffic however is to buy your traffic. You do that through advertising. Advertising can take many forms, the traditional ways as well as the internet ways. You can use both. The most common internet way is pay-per-click advertising or PPC for short.

Pay-per-click is when you pay a fee from 5 cents to $10 (possibly), every time somebody clicks on your ad. The expense of the click is determined by the competition on the keyword you’re attaching your ad to, and how close to the number one spot you want your ad to run in. It sometimes is even determined by whether Google likes you or not (that’s where the $10 clicks come in; but most clicks are way much less, maybe around 90% or more less).

You can run banner ads on other people’s websites too if you like and this cost a fee too. Basically, with the paid advertising ways, you decide on the advertising channel, you write an ad and run the ad utilizing a strict daily budget and stick to it. Then you begin testing your ads for optimal success. Testing is always ongoing.

The free ways of generating targeted traffic to your website takes time or money. Time if you do it yourself; money if you hire somebody to do it for you. And this particular way is through articles. You (or somebody) writes articles on something in your chosen niche. In each article is a link back to your website. You post the articles on article directories for people to pick up and post on their website for their content. Your link is on somebody else’s website now. This could happen to dozens or hundreds of websites utilizing your article on their website.

The more articles you post to article directories, the more chances you have of your articles being picked up by somebody. People visiting those websites read your article, see your link, and click on over to your website. That’s free traffic.

You can do other things too for free traffic like make a video on a subject and put your link in it so people can visit your website if they see the video. You can use social networking websites like MySpace to make your site known (careful though, most of these social websites have strict rules about how you can advertise—check into them before proceeding here). You can also answer people’s questions on forums and in your signature add your website link so people can click over. More free traffic.

This is where you make your website search engine friendly. I.e., you present your website in such a way that search engines like it and will then rank you high in the natural search results of people’s searches.

All these are free ways of generating traffic to make money. And there are more. The reader hopefully notices the free way takes a little time before reaping the benefits and the paid way brings traffic instantly practically, but cost money. If one has some money, I would suggest a balance. Buy some traffic while you’re optimizing your website for free traffic as well. Using both methods for maximum traffic potential would be a good course to follow. . .
