Part 3 of 3
This article is part 3 on SEO basics series. For part 1, see Search Engines What You May Not Know A Broad Overview. For part 2 see Search Engine Optimization Overview.
Search engines love to see other websites having links pointing to your website. The more outside sites pointing to your site, the better search engine optimized is your site. This is part of search engine optimization or SEO for short.
But having links back to your website isn’t enough, really, in itself. Because you see, link backs from popular sites rank higher in search engine algorithms than link backs from unpopular sites.
So that means if the website linking back to you is a site that the search engines already have ranked high as a popular site, then that makes your site look more important to search engines and that helps boosts you up several notches in organic search results. Having as many of these high quality sites with links back to your website will help your site’s ranking tremendously.
Now the types of websites search engines rank as popular and important would be sites like eBay, Amazon, Apple Computer, The White House, MapQuest, etc. And there are ways of getting high quality sites to link to your start-up site too. It’s actually pretty easy.
For example, if your niche is after market Ford mufflers, you could see if Ford.Com has a forum, go there, find a muffler question somebody asked about, make a quality comment about it, and in your signature add your web address. There you go, you’ve got a link back to your site from Ford.Com and when the search engines see that, your site goes up in stature.
Link backs are more powerful though if the link to your website isn’t the web address itself but a sentence describing what’s on your site. E.g., instead of Mufflers.Com as the link to your site, it’s better to have best Ford mufflers around or some such thing as the link because it describes for the search engines what the visitor should expect to find at the destination and they like that.
So as a website owner, one of your multiple goals for SEO purposes only, is to have high ranking popular sites link to your website.
I say only for SEO purposes because if you’re going strictly the advertising route, you won’t need unique, high quality articles on your website, because SEO doesn’t matter when just advertising. You advertise, person who clicks on your ad is taken to your landing page or direct to a sales page. A sale is made or not. No SEO needed.
As you cam see, there’s not much to that compared to preparing to score high with search engine optimization. SEO takes a lot of work, but is free and worth it if you can land on the first page for your keywords. If not, your chances for visitors (called traffic) decline the further down you are in the natural or organic searches.
When using advertising solely, you don’t worry about SEO, but you’re risking money if no sales result from your advertising traffic. This is one of the reasons why I like doing both: advertise and SEO with the articles and link backs and things. It’s more work yes, but it increases my chances of finding somebody I can help with what they need. Hopefully this article has helped you understand SEO a little better.
