Helping Marketers One At A Time

eBay.com is a huge marketplace. You know this is true if you’ve spent any time at all looking around there. If you haven’t checked it out yet, you might like to take just a few minutes to do that to see for yourself how huge it is. Especially if you’re interested in getting started in internet marketing and haven’t yet decided exactly how you’ll go about doing this. EBay may be for you.
A good rule of thumb to use when considering a channel for marketing something is to not overlook places where money is being spent, and eBay qualifies as a huge marketplace. E.g., eBay’s gross merchandise sales volume for all of 2008 according to Hoovers (http://www.hoovers.com/ebay/--ID__56307,ticker__EBAY--/free-co-fin-factsheet.xhtml), was 8.5 billion dollars, up from 7.7 billion in 2007 and up from 6 billion in 2006 (numbers were rounded). That’s a lot of transactions. So, to answer if the average person can make any money on eBay, the answer to that is a resounding YES! Just based on eBays financials, the people doing this for a living, some of them are making some really serious money.
Which brings us back to you. If you’re serious about breaking into internet marketing and choose to use eBay as your vehicle, you must remember to treat this decision like ANY other business. Because this IS a business, unless all you want is a hobby, which then is a different story.
Like every other business out there, eBay will take time, work, education, dedication and persistence to make it work successfully for you. Oh it can be done; done by anyone willing to do take the necessary steps to succeed. So it really comes down to you, not whether eBay would be profitable for you, because that’s already a given. Like Henry Ford said: “Whether you think you can or whether you think you can’t, you’re right.” (Let that wisdom sink in for a minute.)
One of the things you’ll need to learn is to understand what your market wants and to deliver that efficiently at an affordable price.
The best advice I can give an entrepreneur considering getting involved in eBay for the first time as a business, is to take a couple of weeks, or more if necessary, and develop a business plan. Plan everything out from suppliers, wholesalers, eBay auction templates, shipping, pricing, marketing, everything! Yes, contact these people and make arrangements. Taking these preliminary steps will only drastically improve your chances for success. Otherwise, you just may get frustrated and quit and that’s not what you really want I bet.
Planning will take the bulk of your time initially, realize this. But what’s your alternative? Failure? Or not even trying? You will never be giving yourself or your family a chance at success if you don’t plan and plan thoroughly. As Proverbs says, “He who fails to plan, plans to fail.” So plan for success and know planning takes patience whereas impatience will never succeed. You can only rush a seeds growth with the proper environment. And planning is the proper environment for your seed of success. So plan.
Last tip for success is having your own “unique selling point” (USP). Some experts say a USP is critically important for a new and upcoming business. I’m not 100% convinced that’s so, but I am 100% convinced it wouldn’t hurt. Determining a “unique” selling point for your type of business will be part of your planning stage, something you’ll have to decide upon for yourself. But you aren’t alone here either; there’s help available.
